Happy Birthday Fay Weldon

It’s Fay Weldon’s birthday today.  Her achievements are many and varied and I’m really not qualified to offer a detailed or wide ranging appreciation.  She did do something rather special for me though.  He wrote a truly superb adaptation of Pride and Prejudice for the BBC which I saw at a very impressionable age and which persuaded me that Jane Austen was rigorous, discriminating and profoundly adult novelist capable of remarkable chastening cruelty as well as precisely calibrated hilarity.  Fay Weldon turned me on to Jane Austen and anybody who does that becomes of a sort of Godmother/father for life.

In those days it was still assumed that people could follow quite detailed stories over a period of weeks on television.  And I followed this story of regency self fashioning with remarkable attention.  And when it was over I found a copy of Pride and Prejudice and read it.  And…
