A Guide to Tonight’s Eurovision Semi-Final. Just don’t use it to put a bet on.

May 9, 2017

Hi All,

Please find my guide to the first semi-finals of Eurovision being broadcast tonight.  Do bear in mind that this is a completely impressionistic guide and is bereft of any diagnostic value.  I have my faves of course.  Finland is my particular fave, followed by Portugal and Montenegro.  But my own judgement is not to be trusted.  Sweden is very highly regarded this year, and it does nothing for me at all.  I loved the Austrian entry last year and it came nowhere in particular.

(Incidentally, Swedes seem to be writing most of the songs in Europe – or co-writing them at any rate.)

If instead, you want some sort of clue as to who is likely to win, you should instead look at Adrian Kavanagh’s latest blog which gathers relevant data in an organised way.

This guide is only worth a bit of a chortle.  If that.

So here they are in running order…

To start with, here is Sweden:

Georgia’s offering is undoubtedly a bigger if not bolder initiative:

In the meantime here are my thoughts on the Australian entry:

And here’s Albania…

Belgium looks like a better bet:

A man who needs a deal of personal space is this guy from Montenegro:

Actually, this is my fave, from Finland:

Azerbaijan are, as usual, well favoured:

And I’ve a very soft spot for Portugal:

Greece does things pretty much by numbers:

Poland irritates me a fair bit:

“Chisinau that’s what I call music?”  Here’s Moldova:

Bring your Dottir to the Slottir.  It’s Iceland:

The Czech Republic says “My Turn” but actually it doesn’t work that way…

Meanwhile I find Hovig from Cyprus downright slappable:

The Armenian entry once met Whitney Houston apparently:

Here, meanwhile, is Omar belting it out for Slovenia:

Latvia offers a more techno-trance version of minimalism:
