“Bring your dottir to the slottir”: Iceland’s 2017 Eurovision entry.

April 8, 2017

It’s heavy on drum and base this one.   It pulsates with technological pain as  it describes a plainly abusive relationship.  “Paper” as sung by Svala is all about being cut.

In terms of its Eurovision appeal – I have to say I can’t imagine everyone from Reykjavik to Baku joining in the chorus.  The song, and the performance of the song, offers spectacle but not shared sentiment.  If Iceland fares particularly well this year, then everything I think I know about Eurovision is wrong.

Here’s the video:

The promotional video, which is rather more interesting than the actual song, places her in a bleak metallic industrial interior – of a kind that used to be employed a lot to film episodes of  Blake’s Seven.  It’s a world of sharpened steel and vatted bio-hazards.  Her dramatic appearance as sinister ice queen is somewhat undercut by her need to wear a very practical puffy red anorak.  Fun is to be had with fluorescent lights.

Perhaps this would be a winner if everyone watched Eurovision from the right (or wrong) kind of nightclub.  Perhaps you actually need to be gyrating in a reasonably frenzied way to get the most out of it.  But the truth is, watching Eurovision is a fairly sedentary exercise and this sort of song doesn’t really provoke empathy from viewers on a sofa.

As part of her lucky preparation ritual, Svala reports:” I bathe myself in unicorn tears and take a shot of snow on fire.”  If that isn’t lucky I don’t know what is.

Georgia’s offering is undoubtedly a bigger if not bolder initiative:

Frankly, I prefer Finland:

I’ll be sorely vexed if Finland doesn’t do better than Cyprus

Frankly I’d rather the Czech Republic won – though they won’t…

Belgium looks like a better bet:

But if it isn’t, maybe it will go to Azerbaijan with this…

Armenia’s Entry is nowhere near as scary:

In the meantime here are my thoughts on the Australian entry:

And here’s Albania…
