Theresa May has officially declared that Britain supports Trump’s agenda.
“So as we rediscover our confidence together — as you renew your nation just as we renew ours — we have the opportunity — indeed the responsibility — to renew the special relationship for this new age. We have the opportunity to lead, together, again”
With words like “rediscover” and “renew”, Theresa May has made it clear that Britain endorses Trump’s belief that America was floundering under Obama and has already started doing better Trump. You don’t rediscover something unless it’s lost. You don’t renew something unless it’s dilapidated. May has therefore made a very direct and partisan intervention supporting Trump’s narrative, and rejecting the views of the majority of Americans who do not support Trump. Britain now stands alongside Trump. Britain is pro-Trump, pro-hatred, pro-torture, pro-lies and pro-stupidity. Turning its back on Europe, Britain now stands proudly and confidently side by side with a treacherous, delusional, sex criminal.
She didn’t have to do this. There are more careful, reserved and qualified ways of greeting a new foreign head of state. You don’t have to praise a new president at the expense of their predecessor. May’s speech indicates not conventional diplomacy but an ideological commitment. Britain is no longer just a friend to America, but a friend to Trump’s disgusting version of America – which means, paradoxically, that Britain is no longer a friend to most Americans. Far from tempering Trump, Theresa May has become a cheerleader and an enabler. Trump will celebrate May’s support. It will put a spring in his step and encourage him. “Britain” is therefore hoping to promote Trump’s agenda.
Given May’s authoritarian tendency to simply evaporate dissent and speak as though the xenophobic Right and “Britain” are interchangeable terms, she is effectively claiming that sixty million people, by virtue of the passport they are stained with, are now fans of a fascistic government led by an unstable maniac. May’s speech will be widely reported internationally and will spread the message that Brits in general are fans of bigotry, fear, misogyny and idiocy.
Yet of course, by making this speech, allying “Britain” with Trump’s policies, she goes even further in her efforts to destroy Britain, making Scottish independence inevitable, and further destabilising Northern Ireland. Only a politician dead to shame can do this. Only someone who regards placating the xenophobic fringe of her own party above any definition of national interest can behave in the way she does.
Trump’s first week in office has proved that he’s as vicious and crazy as he always to promised to be. The speed and relish with which May has endorsed Trump’s policies ought to be enough to make anyone unfortunate enough to acknowledge Theresa May as their Prime Minister feel physically sickened every time they have to glance at their own passport. The one comfort is that
Britain cannot and will not last for much longer.
