Slovenia’s 2016 Eurovision Entry
Know much about Slovenian Country and Western music?
I’m sure it’s a rich and fertile genre, and I’m certain that Ljubljana’s version of the Grand Ol’ Opry is the envy of the wider Balkan region.
The video is interesting insofar as it smudges the distinction (or transition) between trailer park and movie star trailer. There’s a kind of reversible energy about this short film that makes you uncertain as to whether ManuElla is living in a trailer park dreaming of being a big star, or lolling around a film set, play the part of trailer trash. At one truly cringe-making moment, she signs an autograph for a starry-eyed tweenie – reveling in her status as role-model. And of course, there are loads of unnecessary costume changes, showcasing in this instance not glamour but a desperate and ill-informed yearning for glamour.
Is ManuElla trailer trash or is she pop diva? Who can tell anymore? Is the trailer a home or is it a prop? Does she believe in the power of dreams or is she deconstructing the dream factory? Any or all of these reversible tropes may or may not help to decode the phenomenon of Slovenian Country and Western Music.
The overall sense of the song tedious enough – expressive of the idea that if you believe in the power of your dreams anything is possible – precisely the sort of treacherous nonsense that keeps the world so miserable.
And in the background is a a constant driving C&W twang. We are invited to imagine that beyond this little film set (and/or trailer park), unmeasured vistas of painted dessert beckon. A landscape we never knew Slovenia enjoyed.
Australia, bizarrely, are back…
