Switzerland’s 2016 Eurovision Entry

April 26, 2016

And now, singing for Switzerland… Daenerys Targaryen.

switzerland

Here’s the performance video

She starts out sitting on the floor to sing.  Then she rises as far as her knees for the next bit.  Singing while kneeling when you’re not in church is a bit undignified as well as uncomfortable, so she’s on her feet before too long.  Given her appearance, however, I think the performance is incomplete without a dragon appearing in a puff of smoke so that she can climb on its back and fly all around the venue, completing her triumphant upward mobility.

When she’s singing about “the last of our kind”, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that she’s singing, not about rare and precious lovers, but about the House of Targaryen.  Or maybe dragons.

It’s a whole new world, and we’re facing the fire
Not afraid of our own ghosts,
We’re The Last Of Our Kind
and we’re all that we know
And we’re out of our minds
Not afraid to be brave though,
We’re The Last Of Our Kind

That’s the chorus.  Yeah – that works for dragons.  As it happens Rykka, like Daenerys, is actually an exile – her birth land (birthright?) is far to the West in Canada.

It’s always the nation you least expect that’s going to be incubating dragons.  Centuries of peace and neutrality look like being nothing more than the slow gestation of a new Swiss apocalypse.  Dragon eggs are, after all, the weaponised plutonium of the world.  Nothing can stand in the path of the Mother of Dragons.

I pause for a moment.  Is it just about possible that after binge-watching Game of Thrones in recent weeks – I’m actually seeing things in Eurovision that aren’t really there?

I think this song will do at least enough to get Daenerys Targaryen out of the semi-finals.  but if it doesn’t.  I for one fear her fiery vengeance.

Here, on the other hand, is Poland.

More interesting than Montenegro, anyhow

Far, far more conventional is Azerbaijan

More chillingly, here is Estonia
