Cyprus’ 2016 Eurovision Entry

April 18, 2016

minus one

Where is the love?  I mean, really, where?  This is, after all, the birthplace of Aphrodite – a circumstance that the Cypriot Tourist Board never tires of telling us.  But instead, we get a moody bunch of angry rockers who seem more threatening than almost any other Eurovision act I can remember – including the Finnish trolls who won it a few years ago. (Estonia is up next though, and that lad scares me too.)

Here’s the video…

The idea of a Cypriot road movie seems unconvincing to me.  On this rocky island nation it is in fact impossible to drive all night (or even all day) without being soon interrupted either by the sea or by that tricky border with that part of Cyprus that’s defined as Turkish. The whole concept of “life on the road” seems alien to Cypriot geography.

(Turkey is missing again this year.  This will cause another year of confusion for jurors from Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria and Armenia – who will not know who to hate.  Last year, Turkey did decided not to show up for the centenary of the Armenian genocide.  This year, I think a combination of fears fanned by movement of peoples and a concern that Turkey’s contested European identity might impact on the UK EU referendum, have caused Turkey to lie low again.)

OK, so Minus Zero (for so they are called, do indeed sing about love – but it’s a rather bad-tempered, possessive sort of love.

The song itself sounds like the band sat in a room and listened to “Somebody Told Me” by the Killers over and over again in the presence of a copyright lawyer who told them which bits to change ever so slightly.

Aphrodite would not approve.

On a lighter note, see the Czech Republic’s offering…

And Russia…

San Marino – folks…

Meanwhile, here’s the Netherlands…

And Croatia

And Hungary
