Austria’s 2015 Eurovision Entry

May 23, 2015

Meet the MakeMakes.

Here is there performance video:

You’ve got to feel a bit sorry for these boys really.  I mean they might be following Belgium in the running order, but really they’re following Conchita.  And who can follow Conchita?

The opening piano chords from John Lennon’s “Imagine” plonk away and there’s a guy who looks like the lovechild of John Lennon and Conchita Wurst sitting at said piano.

Actually, the lovechild of John Lennon and Conchita Wurst looks sort of like Hoosier.

Actually, the whole act could be summarised as  “Hoosier sings John Lennon”.

This is music to sway and wave a tiny flag to. It’s the sort of song that sounds memorable but isn’t it.  While you’re listening to it, you think – “hey I might still remember this in five minutes time.”  But give minutes later, you won’t.   If it wasn’t wilting in the shadow of last year’s Austrian entry, it might actually be a contender.  It is so wilting.  It isn’t a contender.

It builds fairly predictably though impressively its chord sequence and eventually yer man stands up to stretch his legs a bit.  At which point his piano catches fire.  Because the Austrians have decided that nothing looks cooler than pretending not to notice when your piano catches fire.

A piano is not a guitar, however, and while Hendrix (properly motivated) could continue to play his guitar while it was on fire, Our MakeMake front man can only stomp about in front of it a bit.

If I’m honest, I’m not sure the piano is really on fire at all.  I think it could be some sort of a trick.   The logistical survival of The Who, back in the sixties, was compromised by Pete Townsend’s less than responsible attitude to expensive equipment.  Torching a grand piano on a regular basis would strain the finances even of a state-backed outfit like the MakeMakes.
